Be Free

about

“I wrote Be Free in 2020 during the opening months of lockdown at a time when, on the one hand I felt a huge sense of global unity and possibility that we could collectively transform how we were living onto a healthier and more sustainable path whilst, also feeling a huge sense of desperation at the dividedness growing both within my community and globally.

My father was desperately ill, in intensive care, battling for his life and my community was split between conspiracy theorists, pro-vaxers and those trying to navigate some middle ground within it all. My father’s fight against Covid was heart-breaking and whilst he initially won his battle and became strong enough to leave hospital, he never fully recovered and finally passed away in January 2022 after contracting the virus for a second time.

In writing this song, part of me was hoping we could find a way through these divisions and limiting beliefs to find a way to look at the bigger picture. Firstly, by individually transforming our own shadows. Then collectively as a species transform how we are living and relating to one another. It feels like a monumental challenge, to make the radical changes needed quickly enough, but I believe we have to, and need to fast.’

lyrics

BE FREE

Oh with these endless days of summer
As we stand together but oh so far apart
And my mothers eyes are tired and my fathers wheezing
As a daughter or son cries for the love in their hearts

As we join our voices far and wide
With a prayer that we can change
As we join our voices far and wide
Feel the beauty of these days
As we join our voices far and wide
With this love we can bring a new dawn to light

And we can be free oh free,
We can be free, oh free
From the shadows of our minds
We can be free, oh free
We can be free, oh free
From the shadows of our times
As we dream this new world into life
Oh oh

What to do with all these hours
Are we all parents just trying to find ways
To reassure the child within and without that its ok
When fears oh they tremble up from inside

But it’s a time to breath, a time of hope
It’s a time a time to let this old stuff go
It’s a time to see, time to believe
That there’s so much love to give and receive
A time to change, a time to wake up
A time to know we have more than enough and believe

We can be free oh free,
We can be free, oh free
From the shadows of our minds
We can be free, oh free
We can be free, oh free
From the shadows of our times

We can be free, oh free
We can be free, oh free
From the shadows of our minds
We can be free, oh free
We can be free, oh free
From the shadows of our times
As we dream this new world into life
